Fashion, Ahoy! The nautical look in the world of fashion.
A stripy top or an officer’s jacket: who doesn’t have one in their wardrobe? Many fashion designers, including Chanel and Gaultier, draw inspiration from elements of sailor’s and captain’s uniforms.
The fashion exhibition ‘Fashion, Ahoy!’ offers an overview of international haute couture and prêt-à-porter from Paris and London. Leading designs from fashion houses including Dior, Gaultier, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Rykiel, Castelbajac, Westwood and home-grown Dutch designers such as Viktor & Rolf, Francisco van Bentum, Jeroen van Tuyl and Marlies Dekkers have been brought together in an exhibition that is the first of its kind in the Netherlands.
Highlights of the exhibition also include the first sailor’s suit worn by the young English Prince of Wales, on display for the first time, and the uniform belonging to HRH Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, in his rank as commodore of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The fashion exhibition will be open to visitors from 25 September to 13 March 2011
